FLOATING HOLIDAY: So when is Veterans Day this year? Literally, Saturday, Nov. 11. But call a Los Angeles city, county or federal office today and you’ll be out of luck. Government workers are off for the holiday. Unless, that is, you want to call--or stop by--the post office, which is observing the holiday Saturday, but open Friday and Monday, as are many major banks. Schools in the LAUSD are closed today, so government workers can take their kids to the bank, post office or a Veterans Day sale. Everyone else’s kids? Home alone.

HOLD THE FRIES: Has the Hamburger Hamlet turnaround hit the skids? Shares in the Sherman Oaks-based company plunged Thursday (D2) after officials reported growing losses that might result in a bankruptcy filing. . . . The company had been attempting a turnaround under the guidance of a new CEO who had helped build the Islands restaurant chain.

GONE TOO SOON: Hundreds of Los Angeles police officers honored a fallen colleague Thursday. Rookie officer Gabriel Perez-Negron was killed Saturday by a speeding motorist in Reseda. . . . His injured partner, Martin Guerrero, attended the Burbank funeral in a wheelchair (B1).
