ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: PREP EXTRA : Corona del Mar Rallies to Beat Irvine, 29-22
IRVINE — Corona del Mar rallied from an eight-point first half deficit to defeat Irvine, 29-22, in a Sea View League game in front of 3,800 Thursday night at Irvine.
After tying the score, 15-15, in the third quarter on a 14-yard run by Josh Walz and a two-point conversion run from Tom O’Meara, Corona del Mar (7-3, 3-2 in league) went ahead with 9 minutes 49 seconds left in fourth.
Walz set up the touchdown with a short pass to Ryan Burns. Burns took it 35 yards down to the one-yard line, avoiding several tackles along the way. Then Ryan Crogan, on his only carry of the game, took the ball in a 22-15 lead.
After Irvine (6-4, 3-2) went three downs and punted, the Sea Kings got the ball back to make it 29-15 with 4:20 left.
On third down, O’Meara carried the ball 15 yards to Irvine’s two-yard line. Two plays later, O’Meara scored helped Crogan’s block.
Irvine scored with 2:01 remaining, on Jake Savano’s second touchdown of the night. Savano scored from two-yards to make it 29-22.
Irvine attempted an onside kick, but Walz made a impressive grab and the Sea Kings ran out the clock.
