Edward M. Greenberg; Directed Musical Classics
Edward M. Greenberg, 71, a director of hit musical classics on both coasts. Greenberg, who retired in 1991 from teaching drama and theater at Queens College in New York, was the former associate producer and stage director for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Civic Light Opera Assn. In that capacity, he was instrumental in founding its Musical Theater Workshop in 1962. He had also worked with the St. Louis Municipal Opera. In the mid-1960s, Greenberg directed a series of revivals for New York’s Lincoln Center, including “The King and I,” “The Merry Widow,” “Kismet” and “Carousel.” Born in Brooklyn, Greenberg was educated at New York’s City College and the University of Wisconsin. Among his students at Queens College was comedian Jerry Seinfeld. On Nov. (21) in New York of a stroke.
