ROUNDUP : Montclair Prep Opens With Lopsided Victory
Jeff Benson had 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Montclair Prep opened the season with a 78-44 victory over Lone Pine in a nonleague game Tuesday night at Montclair Prep.
Geoff Hull added seven points and 10 rebounds for the defending state Division V champions.
The Mounties outscored Lone Pine, 52-15, from the final two minutes of the first half to the end of the third quarter.
In other boys’ basketball games:
Campbell Hall 72, Glendale Adventist 57--Helemanu Wallace had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Demetrius Ingram added 15 points and three steals for the Vikings in season opening nonleague game at Campbell Hall.
Mike Appell had 10 points and seven assists for the Vikings.
Aaron Espian led the Cougars with 18 points.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Calabasas 57, Harvard-Westlake 46--Heather Robertson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for host Calabasas (1-0) in a nonleague opener.
Jamie Apody added 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals for the Coyotes, and Cara Blumfield had seven points, seven assists and seven steals.
Cleveland 47, Jefferson 23--Stacey Harris had 15 points for Cleveland (1-1) in a second-round consolation bracket game of the Eagle Rock tournament.
Palmdale 75, Victorville 37--Edneisha Curry had 27 points and was five of five from three-point range, and Casey Bledsoe added 22 points, sinking all four of her three-points shots, as the Falcons cruised to a season-opening nonleague victory at Palmdale.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Southwestern 94, Glendale 77--Ryan Sylva and Matt Hagman each scored 13 points for host Glendale (0-4) in a nonconference game.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Chapman 75, Cal Lutheran 54--Nicole Albert had 15 points and Anita Richardson added 11, but Cal Lutheran fell in its home opener.
The Regals (0-2) shot only 28.8% from the field and committed 23 turnovers. Chapman (2-2) committed 33 turnovers, but made 53.3% of its shots, including 62.5% in the second half.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Monroe 3, Reseda 2--Alexis Boyadjian scored twice and Juan Longoria made seven saves for visiting Monroe in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener.
William Diaz scored in the first half for Reseda, and Marvin Quijano added a goal for the Regents as time expired.
St. Francis 4, Maranatha 2--Pete Vagenas scored two goals and had two assists, and Eric Johnson added two goals and an assist for the Golden Knights in a season-opening nonleague match at Duarte High.
Oak Park 2, Chaminade 1--Colin McDonnell scored in the 60th minute to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Eagles (1-0-1) to a nonleague victory at Oak Park. Don Solis had the other Eagles’ goal.
Buena 4, Agoura 3--The Chargers let a 3-2 second-half lead slip away in the final 20 minutes of a season-opening nonleague match at Buena. Ron Zavlodaver and Billy Rinker each scored second-half goals, and Bryan Pelto added 11 saves for Agoura.
Calabasas 5, Canyon 1--Kevin Wang and David Appel each scored two goals, and Josh Greene had three assists for host Calabasas (1-0) in a nonleague opener.
Matt Jordan had seven saves for Canyon (0-1), and David Rosenberg made six saves for the Coyotes.
Palmdale 8, Paraclete 0--Murad Dibbini scored five goals for the Falcons (1-0) in a nonleague match at Lancaster Park.
Crespi 2, Highland 2--Chris Chavez scored a goal with 20 minutes left in the match to give visiting Highland a tie in a nonleague opener.
Justin Spina’s goal on an assist from Justin Canel had given Crespi a 2-1 lead three minutes earlier.
La Canada 4, Valencia 0--Nick Andrus had two goals and an assist as the Spartans (1-0) outshot the Vikings, 32-1, in a nonleague match at Valencia. Christopher Winslow had 18 saves for the Vikings (0-1).
Moorpark 4, Alemany 2--Orlando Orta scored two goals for the Musketeers (1-0) in a nonleague match at Alemany.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Agoura 11, Grant 0--Junior Christine Larralde had four goals and two assists for the host Chargers in a nonleague opener.
Freshmen Emily Toon (two assists) and Julie Stuart each added two goals for Agoura.
Crescenta Valley 8, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Heidi Greco had two goals and two assists for host Crescenta Valley in a nonleague opener.
Elizabeth Torkington and Kelly Hom also had two goals for the Falcons.
Calabasas 1, Canyon 1--Mandy Kearns scored for host Canyon (0-0-1) with 10 minutes remaining to give the Cowboys a tie in a nonleague opener.
Mandy Kearns scored for the Coyotes (0-0-1).
GIRLS’ TENNIS
City Section individual tournament--Leslie Musser of Van Nuys, one of the eight seeded players, swept Westchester’s Neda Stojanovich, 6-0, 6-0, in a first-round singles match at Mountain Gate Country Club.
In doubles play, Taft’s Pat Rungratanasunthorn and Helen Le defeated Rayka Ghaderi and Summer Rodriguez of Hamilton, 6-0, 6-0.
Granada Hills’ Suzanne Hawson and Michelle Reisner defeated America Gomez and Angelick Maciel of Bell, 6-3, 6-3.
