1995-1996: GIRLS’ SOCCER / Soccer Preview : Six Teams To Watch : El Modena
Coach: Jeff Pearson (second year).
1994-95: 21-6-1 overall, 8-1-1 in the Century League and league champions for second-consecutive season; lost in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Key returners: Aja Cordova, midfielder, Sr.; Stephanie Esparza, midfielder, Sr.; Allison Lubke, midfielder, Sr.; Nicole Terry, forward, Sr.; Kaylee Whitfield, forward, Sr.; Laurie Zemke, defender, Sr.
Key newcomers: Lindsay Kustich, midfielder, Fr.; Jill Pearson, forward, Jr.
Outlook: El Modena returns eight starters, including four first-team all-league selections from last season, and should compete for the league title with Canyon. The Vanguards have two of the county’s best players this season: Whitfield, a first-team All-Southern Section Division II selection, and Pearson, who has been too busy with the Olympic Development Program the past two years to play high school soccer. Pearson, who is the coach’s sister, has a good shot at winning the Division II offensive player of the year award. Whitfield, Terry and Pearson will be a formidable trio up front.
