BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Belmont Can’t Stop Sinning, Who Hits 37

Nathan Sinning had 37 points and five rebounds to propel Crescenta Valley High to a 71-46 victory over Belmont in a Burbank-Hoover tournament first-round game Wednesday night at Burbank High.

Sinning hit nine of 14 three-point shots as part of a 14-for-23 shooting performance.

Brad Lyans had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Falcons (1-0), Mike Greco added nine points and 11 rebounds, and Jake Willis had four points and 12 assists.

Royal 66, Pasadena 50--Scott Schnetzler and Ryan Nielsen each scored 18 points, and Marques Pena added 14 for Royal (1-0) in the opening round of the Gahr tournament.

Thousand Oaks 97, Verbum Dei 68--Mike Lauer scored 29 points and the Lancers (1-0) routed the Eagles (0-1) in the first round of the Loyola tournament.

Joe Riccio added 15 points and Scott Sheridan had 13 for the Lancers.

Buena 90, Pius X 44--The Bulldogs (1-0) scored the first 21 points in the first round of the Loyola tournament.

Ceneka Shaw scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter. John Tobias added 14 points for Buena.

Saugus 53, San Fernando 46--Davitt Conley scored 14 points and Tim Faulconer blocked four shots for the Centurions in a first round game of the Saugus tournament.

Marty Trinidad scored 20 points for San Fernando.

Glendale 81, Sylmar 32--Omid Rahimi, Mike Moradian, Steve Avetyan and Arman Apikov each scored 18 points for the Dynamiters in the first round game of the Saugus tournament.

Rahimi added six assists for Glendale (1-0), which led, 29-11, after the first quarter.

Cleveland 86, Monroe 56--Tony Hoggatts, playing his first game in nearly two seasons, scored 30 points for the Cavaliers in their opener.

Hoggatts, a 6-6 shooting guard, had not played since transferring from Faith Baptist midway through the 1993-94 season.

Junior Brignac scored 15 points, and Derrek McGhee and Donald Holt each scored 12 for Cleveland.

Yaniv Horovieits scored 13 points for Monroe (0-1).

Birmingham 68, Reseda 34--David Redmond had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Braves, who held the Regents scoreless in the first quarter.

Sophomore Ellis Richardson had 17 points for Birmingham.

Chatsworth 76, Poly 53--Jerome Joseph scored 33 points and Eddie Miller added 23 as the Chancellors opened the season with a rout at Poly.

The Parrots made just 14 of 43 free throws. Jonny Lopez scored 12 points and Gilberto Ramos had 11 for Poly.

University 61, Grant 60--Donald Patterson’s 26 points and 12 rebounds weren’t enough for Grant.

Antonio Hood, who scored 21 points, sank two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to give University (1-0) the victory.

GIRLS

Royal 69, Glendale 55--The Highlanders rebounded from one-for-13 shooting in the second quarter to outscore the Dynamiters, 48-30, in the second half in the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Jennie Broadhurst scored 16 points, including three three-pointers, for Royal (1-0) and Sarah Parola added 14.

Narineh Hartoonian scored 25 points for Glendale (0-1).

Simi Valley 83, Canyon 33--The Pioneers’ fast break and full-court press were too much for the Cowboys (1-1) in the first round of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Tawnee Cooper had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Simi Valley (1-0). Jamie Griffin added 19 points and also had nine steals.

Valerie Wiggins scored 10 points for Canyon.

Alemany 72, Village Christian 35--Francine Bennette scored 19 points for the Indians (1-0) in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist. Stacey Mendoza scored 12 points and Carly Funicello added nine for Alemany.

Crescenta Valley 66, Littlerock 21--Every Falcon but one scored an their defense held the Lobos to three field goals through the first three quarters in the first round of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Michelle Greco scored 14 points, and Amirah Leonard added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Falcons (1-0).

Kristen Phillys scored nine points for Littlerock (0-2).

Grant 52, University 25--Nakeisha Perkins had 19 points and 13 rebounds for Grant (1-0) in a nonconference opener.

Poma Stevenson added 18 points and five rebounds, and made three consecutive three-pointers in a one-minute span during the third quarter.

Reseda 54, Birmingham 30--The Regents held the Braves scoreless for the first quarter in a nonleague game at Reseda High.

LaShanda Holland had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Reseda.

MEN

Ventura 69, Kings River 47--Gerald Zimmerman had 14 points for the defending state champion Pirates (9-0) in a nonconference road game. Hakeem Ward added 12 points and nine rebounds.
