Former Dodger third baseman Tim Wallach, a veteran of 15 full big-league seasons, agreed Tuesday to a minor-league contract with the Angels.

Wallach, 38, will report to the Angels’ major league spring training camp as a non-roster invitee.

If he makes the team, Wallach will earn $400,000 and have the chance to make $100,000 more if he has 225 plate appearances. If cut before opening day, Wallach will get $50,000.

Wallach, a resident of Yorba Linda, spent the last three years with the Los Angeles Dodgers after playing 12 full seasons and part of another with the Montreal Expos.

A first-round draft choice and the 10th overall selection by the Expos in 1979, Wallach made his big-league debut on Sept. 6, 1980 as a left fielder against the San Francisco Giants.

The Angels originally drafted Wallach in the eighth round of the 1978 draft, but he chose not to sign with them.

The Dodgers acquired Wallach from the Expos on Dec. 24, 1992, for infielder Tim Barker.

The Dodgers decided following the 1995 season not to pick up their option on Wallach’s contract for 1996. They acquired third baseman Mike Blowers from the Seattle Mariners last week for two minor league infielders.

That deal totally eliminated Wallach from their on-field plans, although Executive Vice President Fred Claire said he had “tremendous respect for Tim and hope that one day soon he’ll be working for us in another capacity.”

Wallach was limited to 97 games because of injuries last season. He hit .266 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.

In the strike-shortened 1994 season, he played in 113 games and hit .280 with 23 homers and 78 RBIs. Wallach had his best season in 1987 with the Expos, hitting .298 with 26 homers and 123 RBIs.

Tony Phillips was the Angels’ third baseman for most of the 1995 season and then became a free agent.
