NICE GUNS? Ed Carbury of Huntington Beach says it pains him that the National Rifle Assn.--he’s a life member--has such a poor media image because of its gun control opposition. So his NRA chapter is sponsoring an all-day free target practice today at the Prado Olympic Shooting Range in Chino. Bring your own weapon. . . . Only cost is a new toy--Christmas donations for the needy. . . . “We’re always on the defensive,” Carbury explains. “We just want to do something positive for the community and at the same time say, hey, we’re not the bad guys you think we are.”
POND PARTY: That speech by retired Gen. Colin Powell at the Pond of Anaheim on Jan. 18 is a private affair put on by Cal State Fullerton. But the university will let you join in--for a price. . . . It will send you two invitation seats for $75, slightly lower if you are already a university donor. Or, you can get a table of 10 on The Pond floor for $5,000. That one gets you a steak dinner and entertainment before his speech.
BOWLED OVER: When Greg Katz Sr., the UC Irvine sports public announcer, was at last year’s Rose Bowl game with his 10-year-old son, the boy told him: “Wouldn’t it be great if you could be the announcer here someday?” Katz, who teaches at Century High in Santa Ana, agreed. To his surprise, a few days ago he was picked as public address announcer for the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl game. . . . “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call,” he says. “In my business, this is a game you dream about doing.”
NO FAN OF THEIRS: Local residents among the 3,000 extras in the new Robert DeNiro movie “The Fan”-- which taped scenes recently at Anaheim Stadium--say it was a lot of fun. Until, that is, they didn’t get paid. It’s been more than two weeks, but Rick Casorla, the extras casting director, says really, the checks are in the mail--along with a note of apology. But extra Lee Treadwell of Fullerton wonders: “Will it get here before Christmas?”
