COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Missed Foul Shots Help Temple Beat No. 1 Kansas in Overtime
Temple scored the first 10 points of overtime and defeated top-ranked Kansas, 74-66, Friday night in the opening game of the inaugural Jimmy V Classic at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.
The victory came nine days after the Owls (3-4) defeated then No. 2 Villanova, and only a few days after they lost to No. 9 Cincinnati.
“Everybody we play has a number,” Temple Coach John Chaney said. “They’re No. 5, No. 1, No. 10. There’s a lot of numbers out there. I schedule as many tough teams as I can. The more tough teams you play the more character you develop.”
Jerod Haase of Kansas (7-1) was at the free-throw line with the score tied, 56-56, with 8.2 seconds to play in regulation. But Haase, who had made his last 10 free throws, missed both.
Mark Jackson had a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds for Temple. Haase had a career-high 30 points.
No. 2 Massachusetts 75, No. 21 Georgia Tech 67--The Minutemen took control with a 9-0 run midway through the second half of the second game of the Jimmy V Classic.
Massachusetts (7-0) also took advantage of Kansas’ loss and will become the No. 1-ranked team when the polls come out next week.
Marcus Camby had 18 points to lead the Minutemen.
The Yellow Jackets are 6-5.
No. 7 Villanova 80, New Orleans 72--Kerry Kittles scored 30 points to lead the Wildcats at New Orleans.
Villanova (8-1) put the game away in the final five minutes with a 12-2 run.
Tyrone Garris led New Orleans (2-3) with 20 points.
PACIFIC 10
Oregon 66, Montana 64--Kenya Wilkins made two free throws with 14 seconds left to give the Ducks (6-3) enough of a cushion to hold on against Montana (7-3) at Missoula, Mont.
Wilkins led all scorers with 23 points.
Stanford 80, Navy 62--Andy Poppink scored 21 points and Dion Cross added 16 as Stanford (4-2) won at Annapolis, Md. Navy is 4-3.
Arizona State 76, Northern Arizona 62--Quincy Brewer scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Sun Devils (4-2) past the Lumberjacks (3-5) at Tempe, Ariz.
Washington 71, Portland 59--Mark Sanford, who didn’t score in the first eight minutes, had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies (4-2) past the Pilots (6-2) at Seattle.
OTHERS
Steve Nash scored 17 points to lead Santa Clara (8-2) past Pacific, 75-70, at Santa Clara. Charles Jones scored 21 points to lead the Tigers (4-2). . . . Rick Yudt scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and fueled two Ohio State spurts as the Buckeyes (6-1) posted a 72-56 victory over San Diego State (4-3) at Columbus, Ohio. . . . Dominick Young scored 26 points and Kendric Brooks added 24 to lead Fresno State (5-4) to a 109-88 victory over Southern Colorado (5-6) at Fresno. . . . Justyn Tebbs scored 23 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead Weber State (5-4) to an 85-68 victory over Wyoming (4-4) at Ogden, Utah. . . . Sophomore guard Cory Carr scored 19 points in a stretch of 7:25 as Texas Tech (7-0) posted an 81-71 victory over BYU (5-3) at Lubbock, Texas.

College Basketball Notes
An athlete and his mother have told the NCAA that he agreed to play basketball at Texas Tech after Red Raider Coach James Dickey promised to arrange a job for the player’s pregnant girlfriend, the Houston Chronicle reported. The athlete was identified as Damon Ashley, who played for the Red Raiders during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Dickey denied any impropriety in his recruiting of Ashley.
