BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Nunnery Shoots Rio Mesa Past El Camino Real in Final

Tyrone Nunnery sank a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play to give Rio Mesa High a 52-50 victory over El Camino Real in the championship game of the Chaminade tournament on Friday night.

Nunnery, who averaged 18.8 points and nine assists and was selected tournament most valuable player, led the Spartans (7-3) with 23 points, eight assists and six steals.

Cameron Henderson scored 31 points for El Camino Real (8-4), which lost to Rio Mesa, 63-60, during pool play of the tournament.

Kennedy 54, Grant 41--Paul McFarlane scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Kennedy in the Bell-Jeff tournament semifinals.

McFarlane also led the Golden Cougars (6-2) in rebounds with nine. Waking Bailey added 10 points and Tommy Gales, a transfer from Bell-Jeff, contributed nine points and six rebounds.

The Lancers (3-6) committed 16 turnovers to Kennedy’s five. Donald Patterson scored 13 points for Grant and Freddy Ramirez added 11. Kennedy will play Eagle Rock in the final tonight at 8.

Poly 55, Bell-Jeff 52--John Gillard scored five of his 10 points in overtime for the Parrots (3-6) in a Bell-Jeff tournament consolation semifinal.

Eric Owens led Poly with 16 points and Jonny Lopez added 10. A layup by Lopez tied the score, 45-45, with two minutes to play in regulation.

Ruben Douglas scored 19 points for the Guards (7-4).

Monroe 51, San Pedro 37--Terrence Cain scored 13 points for Monroe in a Bell-Jeff tournament consolation semifinal.

Calabasas 63, Fillmore 61--Gavin Citron’s layup at the buzzer gave the Coyotes (9-5) a third-place finish in the Valencia tournament. Citron scored a team-high 19 points. Ryan Coleman added 18 points and 10 assists.

Crespi 54, Bakersfield Ridgeview 53--Dennis Fox’s free throw with no time left gave Crespi a fifth-place finish in the Valencia tournament.

Conor O’Neal led the Celts (4-5) with 14 points--including seven of nine free throws--and six assists.

Canoga Park 82, Bakersfield Centennial 81--Jamal Haqq sank two free throws with three seconds left to send the Hunters (6-2) into today’s fifth-place game at the Buchanan tournament in Fresno.

Anthony Ellison (23 points, 12 rebounds), Aaron Lasley (21 points, 14 rebounds), Carlos Harper (20 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three steals) and Haqq (12 points) all scored in double figures for Canoga Park.

Burroughs 68, Crescenta Valley 65--Tega Moceanu, who had 14 points, iced the game after the Indians (6-3) trailed in a nonleague game at Burroughs.

Teammate Jorge Sotomayor scored 21 and J.K. Scott added 19.

GIRLS

Simi Valley 76, Ventura 39--Tawnee Cooper scored a game-high 27 points to propel the Pioneers (11-2) to a championship semifinal victory in the Simi Valley tournament. Cooper made 13 of 20 field-goal attempts and grabbed six rebounds.

Shannon Malia added 11 points and Jamie Griffin had 10 points and six assists for Simi Valley.

Rhiannon Potkey scored 12 for Ventura (4-4).

Alemany 53, Pasadena 48--Sophomore guard Kelli Kobayashi hit four free throws in the last 21 seconds as Alemany hung on for a semifinal victory in the Simi Valley tournament.

The Indians (6-1) clung to a 49-48 edge when Kobayashi stepped up at the end.

Louisville 71, Channel Islands 35--Adriane Bilek and Becky Witt each scored 12 points to spark Louisville (6-3) in a Simi Valley tournament consolation game.

Elanor Ecoffey led Channel Islands (0-9) with nine points.

Culver City 28, Canyon 27--Janell McKelvey scored eight points for Canyon in a consolation game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Oxnard 62, Santa Clara 41--Nicole Black had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Jaline Bradley added 12 points and six assists for the Yellowjackets (3-3) in a nonleague game at Oxnard.

Necee Madrigal scored 17 points for Santa Clara.

Royal 66, Littlerock 38--Michelle Berlin and Amber Shores each scored 14 points as the Highlanders (7-5) won a consolation semifinal of the Saugus tournament.

Glendale 61, Sylmar 44--Karen Shirikjian had 31 points and 12 rebounds, and Alenoush Khachikian scored 14 for the Dynamiters (7-4) in the consolation semifinals of the Saugus tournament.

Nordhoff 43, Crossroads 38--The Rangers (8-5) used 20 points by Erin Barker and an 11-point, 10-rebound effort from Nell Becker in the consolation semifinals at the Santa Barbara tournament.

Thousand Oaks 47, Atherton 39--Jenn Detmer scored 17 points and Nicole Woodruff added 10 for the Lancers (7-3) in pool play in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Harvard-Westlake 47, Dana Hills 37--Suzanne Rubel scored 13 points for the Wolverines (10-2) in a consolation semifinal of the Arroyo tournament.
