STAY TUNED: Eyebrows shot up this week when Walt Disney Co. failed to show as Anaheim announced plans for a huge sports and retail complex around the Big A. . . . But in New York on Thursday, where shareholders approved Disney’s acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC Inc. (D4), Chairman Michael D. Eisner signaled again that a Disneyland expansion is on the horizon. “As our ownership of the Mighty Ducks and our recent potential investment in the California Angels prove, we are committed to growth in the Anaheim area.”
BULLISH, SORT OF: The Los Angeles Clippers didn’t fare so well during their visits to The Pond in 1995--two wins, five losses. So this year, fans who buy the six-game package starting Jan. 20 against Utah will be given a full refund if they are dissatisfied after the first game. . . . In a letter sent to ticket-holders this week, the team’s Executive Vice President Andy Roeser writes: “Sure, we aren’t the Chicago Bulls yet, but we’re young, we’re improving.”
GREAT RAITT: Orange County native John Raitt received a Grammy nomination Thursday for his CD “John Raitt--Broadway Legend.” (F1) . . . But Raitt may have some trouble duplicating the Grammy-winning ways of his daughter, Bonnie. His competition in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category? Frank Sinatra, Julie Andrews, Rosemary Clooney and Eartha Kitt.
BEAR NECESSITIES: “Conservatives are compassionate too,” declares Ruth Calvert. Which is why the National Rush Limbaugh Club of Orange County has raised almost $1,000 to help bring Samson--the 600-pound black bear famous for splashing in a hot tub in a Monrovia neighborhood--to the Orange County Zoo. . . . Part of the proceeds from all of the club’s fund-raisers goes toward construction of Samson’s exhibit cage. Says Calvert: “We love animals just like anyone else.”
