Red Wings Are Stopped by Penguins

Mario Lemieux scored one goal and set up another 15 seconds later in a five-goal second period as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Detroit, 5-2, Friday night at Pittsburgh and ended the Red Wings’ 10-game unbeaten streak.

The Red Wings came into the game with an NHL-best goals-against average of 2.09. They had a disastrous second period, allowing a season-high 23 shots as the Penguins scored four times in six minutes and chased goalie Chris Osgood, whose 1.97 average led the league.

Lemieux topped the 1,300 mark in career points as he had his 24th multiple-point game this season with a goal and two assists.

Washington 4, New York Rangers 4--The Rangers overcame a hat trick by Steve Konowalchuk and rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to salvage a tie with the Capitals at Washington.

The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the opening 1:39, then gave up four consecutive goals before Pat Verbeek and Darren Langdon scored to force an overtime.

New York played the final 43 minutes without leading scorer Mark Messier, who bruised his right leg late in the first period. X-rays were negative.

Buffalo 3, Toronto 1--Dave Hannan and Brad May scored 25 seconds apart in the first period to lead the Sabres over the Maple Leafs at Buffalo.

Pat LaFontaine also scored for the Sabres, who broke a four-game losing streak. John Blue had 26 saves in his first win as a Sabre after losing his two previous starts.

Hartford 4, Ottawa 2--Brendan Shanahan scored twice in the third period, including the tie-breaker, to lead the Whalers over the Senators at Hartford, Conn.

Shanahan shot the puck past Don Beaupre’s glove at 3:33, giving the Whalers a 3-2 lead. The Whaler captain clinched it with an empty-netter in the final seconds after Ottawa pulled its goalie.

Dallas 5, Winnipeg 4--The Stars won their first game in the Central Division after an 0-10-3 start, beating the Jets as Grant Ledyard scored on a rebound with 20 seconds left in regulation at Dallas.

Florida 3, Edmonton 2--Dave Lowry’s second goal of the game-- the 100th of his career--broke a tie and lifted the Panthers to a victory at Edmonton. The Panthers also ended their season-high three-game losing streak with a strong effort by goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick, who made 28 saves.
