Santa Ana Wrestlers Win San Clemente Tournament
Santa Ana won the title at the San Clemente wrestling tournament with five first-place finishes.
Paul Virgin won at 103 pounds, Fernando Serratos at 112, Ignacio Bahena at 119, Sadie Morales (125) and Jose Morales (130), giving Santa Ana, ranked second in Orange County, the victory with 197 points.
San Clemente was third with 132 points. The Tritons’ 215-pounder, Mateo Headrick, won his weight class and the Gorarian Award for most pins in the least amount of time.
In the Canyon wrestling tournament:
Esperanza wins title--Noah Culp was named outstanding upper-weight wrestler for fourth-ranked Esperanza, which easily outdistanced the 19-team field with 176 points.
Culp defeated University’s Jimmie Alvarez in the 142-pound final, and teammate Tyler Monson won at 142 and was named outstanding wrestler in the lower-weight divisions.
In the Pico Rivera El Rancho 24-Way:
Anaheim loses final--Third-ranked Anaheim lost, 34-30, to Norwalk Glenn in the championship match. Glenn (20-1) has handed Anaheim its only three losses this season.
Reuben Droughns was undefeated at 189 pounds (9-0) and had seven pins for Anaheim (27-3). Teammate Edgar Saldivar won at 215 pounds, with seven pins, and Alex Coria went undefeated at 130 pounds.
