Company Sues Over Special-Effects Patents: In its suit, CST Entertainment contends that LucasFilm Ltd., Eastman Kodak Co. and Silicon Graphics Inc. infringed its patent for video special effects techniques. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, alleges the three companies violated CST’s patent restrictions on a filming technique used in special effects, painting and animation. Culver City-based CST says it has held the patent for the video technology since 1987. The lawsuit alleges Kodak, Silicon Graphics and LucasFilm--founded by “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas--have been making, using and selling copies of CST’s technology. Representatives for the three companies were not immediately available for comment.
