Would Bulls Wilt in Series for the Ages?
The streaking Chicago Bulls are on a pace to break the Lakers’ 1971-72 NBA record of 69 victories in a season.
So how would the team led by Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West fare against today’s Bulls?
Bill Sharman, coach of the ’72 Lakers, who won a record 33 consecutive games, told Clifton Brown of the New York Times:
“Of course, I’m partial, but because of Wilt and the way he dominated inside, I think our team would win a seven-game series against the Bulls.”

A big load: In an interview with Irv Kaze on Friday on radio station KIEV, Hank Stram, former coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, had this to say about the Dallas Cowboys’ 300-pound offensive linemen:
“The game of football is X’s and O’s. In their case, it should be O and X, which spells Ox.”

Just shoe it: The Pittsburgh Steelers’ versatile Kordell Stewart is pondering his endorsement future.

“The ‘Drink, No Drive’ Award: To Winnipeg’s Keith Tkachuk, he of the $17-million contract, who stiffed a brewery-backed charity drive after accepting 15 cases from the same company for a players’ party.
“The ‘We Don’t Want to See What’s in Your Crawl Space’ award: To the Blackhawks’ Bob Probert, who, when asked to do a TV interview, said: ‘Sure, but I have to get my teeth--they’re in my trunk.’ ”

Local knowledge: Syracuse basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, after a blizzard forced a two-day postponement of his team’s game at Rutgers:
“Right now we’re just happy to be home--in a town where they know how to use snowplows.”

Looking back: On this day in 1991, the New York Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills, 20-19, in Super Bowl XXV in Tampa, Fla. It was the first of four consecutive Super Bowl losses for the Bills.
