In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Southern California College 70, Cal Baptist 61--Heather Woodruff scored 19 points, Alana Kempton had 17 and Elaine Whittemore had six points and 18 rebounds for SCC (8-12, 1-4).
In nonconference women’s basketball
Concordia 69, Christian Heritage 35--Heather Carll scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds for Concordia (16-6). Wendy White added 11 points and Angela Sather had 10.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Southern California College 100, Cal Baptist 95 (OT)--Robert Darville’s two-point shot at the buzzer sent the game into overtime. Jason Janeski then put SCC on top for good, 89-87, with two free throws.
Eric Walker scored eight of his 28 points in the extra period for the Vanguards (13-8, 4-2), who moved into second place.
In exhibition baseball:
49ers defeat Alumni--Long Beach State scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh and went on to defeat its alumni team, 2-1, Saturday at Blair Field.
Oakland third baseman Jason Giambi singled with one out in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The 49ers answered in their half of the fifth when Jason Knupfer singled, advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on Al Watson’s single.
In men’s tennis:
Villar and Baker advance for Southern California College--Southern California College’s Kevin Villar and Jeff Baker each advanced to today’s men’s No. 5-8 singles semifinals as well as reaching the championship match in the No. 3-4 doubles Saturday at the Cal Poly Pomona tournament.
Villar defeated Tom Dubransky of Azusa Pacific, 6-2, 7-5, and will face Pomona-Pitzer’s Ken Su in the semifinals this morning at 8:30. Baker reached the semifinals by defeating Jose Cardenas of Cal State Los Angeles, 7-5, 6-4. He takes on Guy Altshule of Cal Poly Pomona, also at 8:30.
The championship match will be played at 10:30 a.m.
In doubles, Villar and Baker defeated Clay Warren and Chuck Lindgren of Azusa Pacific, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. They will face Cal Poly Pomona’s Altshule and Ryan Thomas in today’s championship final.
Paulo Barriga and Ryan Lewis of SCC will also vie for a doubles championship today after defeating Arthur Tombakian and Antti Pohjonen of Cal State Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, in the men’s No. 1-2 doubles semifinal.
