For Openers, Pepperdine Wins
Four Pepperdine freshman pitchers allowed four hits in a 12-1 victory over Westmont on Tuesday in the season opener for the Waves, the seventh-ranked team in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
Josh Ober and J.T. Harrison hit home runs for Pepperdine.
Andrew Shibilo allowed all four hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the victory.
Cal Baptist 3, The Master’s 1--Lance Wallace pitched a four-hitter, but Master’s dropped a season-opening nonconference game at Cal Baptist.
Jim Young hit a home run in the eighth inning for Master’s.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 5, New Mexico 4--The Waves (5-0), who are ranked No. 7 in the nation, won five singles matches to notch their 36th consecutive home victory.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine d. Loyola Marymount 15-12, 15-10, 16-14--Peter Kodacsy and Kevin Barnett each had 20 kills for the Waves in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Malibu.
Setter Colin Wellman had 54 assists for Pepperdine (5-2, 1-1).
