San Gabriel Valley : School Board Puts Bond Issue on Ballot
The San Marino Unified School District hopes to do something about “the sorry state that our schools are in,” said Supt. Thomas Godley.
The district’s five schools have not been refurbished since libraries were added to some schools more than four years ago, and one board member said, “The walls are crumbling around us.”
To raise money for renovation, the school board this week unanimously approved placing a $34.9-million general obligations bond on the June 4 ballot. In a special session Wednesday, the board met with architects and some community members to determine the cost of the bonds and the amount the board would have to raise, Godley said.
Going into Wednesday’s meeting, school board officials said they did not know how much the bond issue would cost property owners, but Godley said it would probably raise the property tax an average of $70 to $80 per $100,000.
