Three Ventura College art students received the top three scholarships from the Kansas Institute of Art, one of the leading art schools in the country, college officials said.

Alex Alderette received an $8,000 annual scholarship, and Rika Traxler and Randy Martinez each received $5,000 annual scholarships.

“I’m stoked that I was even accepted into this school,” Alderette said in a statement. “This scholarship has given me a lot of confidence in my ability as an artist.”

The three students took art classes from Ventura College’s Richard Peterson, who attended the Kansas Institute of Art in the 1970s on a similar scholarship.

“They are highly motivated students,” Peterson said. “I noticed their dedication and discipline early on.”

Alderette said he is grateful for the support he got from Ventura College instructors.

“If I didn’t first attend Ventura College, I don’t think I could have gotten into the Kansas Institute of Art,” he said.
