Everything Adds Up Right for Esperanza in Tennis
Esperanza and Santa Margarita each won nine sets in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Esperanza High, but the Aztecs won by edging the Eagles in games, 87-85.
Santa Margarita led, 9-8, heading into the final set and its doubles team of Derek Fears and Nelson Hsu took a 4-0 lead. But Esperanza’s Jeff Chang and Charlie Chein rallied to win that set, 7-5, giving the Aztecs the victory.
Freshman Tom Lloyd won two of three singles sets for Esperanza (1-1). Andrew Tsu swept in singles, 7-6, 6-1, 6-0, for Santa Margarita (0-1).
In other nonleague matches:
Edison 11, San Clemente 7--Beau Kojima swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 for host Edison (1-0).
El Dorado 13, Corona del Mar 5--Jason Playhy and Jevon Crane swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, for visiting El Dorado (1-0).
Foothill 10, Newport Harbor 8--Foothill’s Cameron Taylor clinched the victory by defeating Hank Shieh, 6-4, in the final set. Joost Hol swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for Foothill (1-0).
Fullerton 9, Valencia 9 (Fullerton wins on games, 85-83)--Miguel Rodriguez and Fernando Garcia helped visiting Fullerton (1-0) rally from a 3-6 deficit after singles, winning two of three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Marina 11, Ocean View 7--Casey McKeon and Robert Pazornik swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for Marina (1-0). Paul Choi kept Ocean View (1-1) close at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-0, 6-0.
In nonleague golf:
Cypress 201, Los Amigos 301--Medalist Eric Wang shot a two-under 33 for Cypress (1-1) at Cypress Golf Course.
Estancia 199, Woodbridge 205--Medalist Kyle Song shot a one-over 37 at Rancho San Joaquin for Estancia (2-0).
Fountain Valley 203, Loara 267--Ben Turner was the medalist, shooting par 36 at Mile Square for Fountain Valley (1-0).
Long Beach Wilson 200, Irvine 208--Medalist Jeff Ferguson shot a one-over 37 for Irvine (0-1) at Recreation Park.
Santa Margarita 188, Servite 207--Santa Margarita’s Kelly Craig and Steve Wagner and Servite’s Jeff McGraw tied for medalist honors shooting one-over 37s at Coto de Caza. Santa Margarita had five players shoot 38 or better.
Sunny Hills 176, Marina 219--Terry Noe, Jin Park and Dusty Schmidt each shot a two-under 33 for Sunny Hills (2-0) at Meadowlark.
In gymnastics:
Brea Olinda 169.2, Palos Verdes Peninsula 164.7--Brea’s Shaunna DeSimone won the all-around and scored a 9.5 on the uneven bars and a 9.4 on the balance beam.
In nonleague boys’ swimming:
Villa Park 105, Costa Mesa 61--
Brian Pharris won the 200 freestyle (1:54.87), 100 butterfly (58.56) and helped Villa Park (1-0) win the 200 medley relay. Costa Mesa’s Ryan Dandy won the 100 free (50.10) and swam on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
Los Alamitos 104, Santa Margarita 66--Freshman Filiz Gumusaneli won the 50 freestyle (26.9) for Los Alamitos (1-0).
Villa Park 120, Costa Mesa 50--Jessica Klugman, Jenny Michel and freshman Maureen Dunn won a total of six individual events and each swam on two of the three winning relay teams for the Spartans (1-0).
