Days, Times Are Set for Prep Finals
The Southern Section announced Wednesday the days and times for this weekend’s girls’ basketball championship games at the Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus.
The Mater Dei girls’ team will try for its second consecutive Southern Section title at 8 p.m. Friday. The Monarchs will play Ventura Buena, Mater Dei’s opponent in the finals the last three seasons, for the Division I-A championship.
Saturday night at the Pyramid, Brea Olinda, vying for its eighth consecutive section title, plays for the Division II-A championship at 6:45 p.m. against Ocean View. The Seahawks are playing in their first title game.
Woodbridge will try to win its third consecutive Division II-AA title Saturday when it plays Riverside J.W. North at 8:30 p.m.
In the boys’ basketball finals Saturday at the Pond, Santa Margarita, playing in its second title game in three years, meets Riverside North in the Division II-AA championship game at 2:45 p.m.
Mater Dei, looking to win five section championships in a row, plays Glendora in the Division I-A final at 8:30 p.m.
Saturday’s games at the Pond and Pyramid are broken into morning and evening sessions, with separate admission charges.
In championship soccer games Friday at Cerritos Gahr High, Orange plays Compton Dominguez in the boys’ Division II final at 4 p.m., Esperanza meets Palos Verdes Peninsula at 6 p.m. in the Division I boys’ title game, followed by Los Alamitos and Mission Viejo playing for the Division I girls’ title at 8 p.m.
The Orange-Dominguez game was rescheduled to avoid conflicting with Dominguez’s appearance in the boys’ basketball Division II-A final Saturday afternoon.
Saturday, also at Gahr High, Century League rivals El Modena and Canyon meet at 8 p.m. in the Division II girls’ title game.
