Kemp Is Out, but Seattle Stays On
The Seattle SuperSonics are playing so well that they’re even breaking records without leading scorer and rebounder Shawn Kemp.
The SuperSonics won a franchise-record 13th consecutive game Saturday night by getting double-figure scoring from six players in Kemp’s absence as they beat the New Jersey Nets, 103-92, at East Rutherford, N.J.
The old Seattle record of 12 consecutive victories was set by the 1982-83 team coached by Lenny Wilkens.
Kemp, who sprained his left foot against the Celtics on Friday, is day-to-day.
OTHER GAMES
Shaquille O’Neal scored a season-high 41 points, and the Orlando Magic moved closer to the NBA record for consecutive home wins with a 115-89 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. O’Neal has scored 30 points or more in seven of 10 games since the All-Star break. The 7-foot-1 center also had 17 rebounds and is averaging 29.6 points and 11.6 rebounds during that stretch. The Magic improved to 30-0 at Orlando Arena, the best home start in league history, and has won 37 consecutive regular-season games on it’s homecourt--one shy of the record held by the Celtics. . . . Michael Jordan, showing no effects from a hard fall the night before, scored 21 points as the Chicago Bulls routed the Boston Celtics, 107-75, at Chicago where the Bulls are 28-0. . . . The San Antonio Spurs survived the ejection of David Robinson, the result of an argument with officials, and still managed to beat the Philadelphia 76ers, 115-101, at San Antonio, thanks in part to Sean Elliott’s eight three-point shots. . . . Terry Cummings scored a season-high 24 points to help the Milwaukee Bucks rally from a 19-point deficit and edge the Atlanta Hawks, 110-106, at Milwaukee. . . . Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored 33 points to lead the Denver Nuggets past the cold-shooting Vancouver Grizzlies, 108-82, at Denver. Vancouver shot only 37% from the floor.
