Orange Lutheran’s Norton Is Perfect in Her Varsity Debut
Freshman Erin Norton, making her first varsity appearance, pitched a perfect game as Orange Lutheran defeated Capistrano Valley Christian, 16-0, Saturday in the second game of a softball doubleheader.
In the first game, Orange Lutheran (2-0) won, 14-1, as Norton went three for three and Tammy Mahshi hit a home run.
In the perfect game, Norton struck out seven.
In other nonleague softball:
Canyon 7-5, Loara 0-1--Pitcher Veronica Lopez struck out 12, including seven in a row for Canyon (2-0) in the first game.
Foothill 2, Upland 0 (11 innings)--Marie Gieron drove in Lindsey Fossatti, who had tripled, to break a scoreless tie in the 11th inning to give Foothill (2-0) the go-ahead run.
In the Loara baseball tournament:
Diamond Bar 4, El Toro 1--Clemente Bonilla had three hits for El Toro (1-1) in a second-round loss at Boysen Park. Spencer Oborn tripled and scored on a first-inning error for Diamond Bar (2-0).
Edison 5, Loara 0--Christian Popoff went three for three with a double and a run batted in for Edison (2-0).
Huntington Beach 5, La Quinta 4--David Yadrick singled in two runs to tie the score in the sixth for Huntington Beach (2-0). Yadrick later scored the go-ahead run on a bunt single by David Van Hooreveke and a La Quinta throwing error.
Katella 10, San Clemente 3--Drake Gustafson was two for three with a double and two RBIs for Katella (2-0).
Laguna Hills 9, Riverside North 8--Jay Johnson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift Laguna Hills (1-1) to the consolation-round victory.
Los Alamitos 6, Cypress 2--Los Alamitos scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break open a one-run game in the second round. David Bacani had two hits and scored twice for the Griffins (2-0).
Marina 5, Lakewood 3--Justin Lynch struck out eight in his complete game for Marina (2-0).
Ocean View 8, Villa Park 7--Cory Carr hit a grand slam with two outs in bottom of the seventh to give Ocean View (1-1) the victory.
Western 1, Kennedy 0--David Bell threw a two-hitter for Western (2-0), which scored the only run on a bases-loaded walk in the first inning.
In nonleague boys’ track:
Foothill 77, Brea Olinda 66, Cypress 25--Brea Olinda had three double winners. Guillermo Esparza took first in the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.3), Jim Norum won the shotput (47-9 1/2) and discus (142-8) and Mike Case won the 1,600 (4:48.3) and 3,200 (10:37).
In nonleague girls’ track and field:
Foothill 101, Brea Olinda 60, Cypress 9--Brea Olinda took first place in eight events, but finished second to Foothill. Maika Nelson won the 400 (59.7) and anchored both winning relay teams for Brea Olinda (1-0). Nelson also took third in the high jump.
