Monroe Can’t Decode Morse

Derek Morse struck out 11 and did not walk a batter in pitching a one-hitter for Kennedy High in a 7-0 victory over Monroe in a San Fernando tournament game on Tuesday at Kennedy.

Morse (2-0) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up by a leadoff single. Christian Bartlett had a three-run double in the second and finished with two hits for Kennedy (3-0).

Taft 11, Hueneme 1--Jesse Chastain had three hits and scored two runs, and Matt Aaronson and Mitch Spector each added two hits for the Toreadors (1-3) in a Westside tournament pool-play game at Taft.

Mike Turnette (1-0) limited the Vikings (0-3) to four hits and one run over five innings.

In other Westside tournament pool-play games:

Alemany 14, Canyon 5--Sergio Franco collected two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in for the Indians at Alemany.

Ken Ordona had two hits, including a home run, in the first inning, when Alemany (2-1) sent 11 batters to the plate.

Ordona’s homer was his second of the season. Mario Angiano added two hits and had three RBIs for the Indians.

Junior Chris Coash had two hits, including a solo homer in the seventh, and had two RBIs for Canyon (0-3).

Channel Islands 13, Beverly Hills 4--Ben Gomez had three hits and drove in three runs, and Charles Merricks had four RBIs for the Raiders (2-1).

Manuel Romero (1-0) had six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Loyola 11, Hart 7--Kevin Bell had two hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored two, and Mike Bland added two hits and three RBIs for the Indians (2-1).

Buena 10, Saugus 4--Brady Phelps’ two-run single in the fourth broke open a close game for the host Bulldogs (3-0). Emilio Aragon had three hits and drove in two runs for Buena, and Mario Robledo added an RBI single and RBI double.

Ryan Ellison and Derek Lyons had solo home runs for the Centurions (1-2), who had 10 hits and stranded 14 runners.

Kyle Jolly had two hits and drove in one run for Saugus, and Jeremy Mushinski also had two hits.

Calabasas 6, Poly 6--The Coyotes (0-1-1) rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to tie the Parrots (1-1-1) before the San Fernando tournament pool-play game at Calabasas was called after six innings because of darkness.

Brian Fatur had two hits, including a three-run inside-the-park home run, and scored twice, and Tanner Trosper slugged a solo home run and reached base in all four of his at-bats for Calabasas.

Oxnard 11, Palisades 8--Eric Swanger had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, and Chad Pierson added three hits and an RBI for the Yellowjackets (1-2) at Oxnard.

Swanger (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out 12.

Notre Dame 6, Montclair Prep 1--Kevin Jerkens (1-1) pitched five shutout innings for the visiting Knights (1-2), allowing two hits and no walks and striking out two. Mike Acosta had three hits for Notre Dame, including a two-run home run.

Ventura 2, St. Bernard 1--Leadoff hitter Jason Watkins and Aaron Dixon each had two hits and scored a run for the Cougars (2-1) at Ventura.

Senior right-hander Shawn Wenger (1-0) allowed two hits and an unearned run, striking out three.

Burroughs 4, Banning 3--Tim Cates had a run-scoring single in a four-run third inning for the Indians in a quarterfinal game of the El Segundo tournament.

Wes Hutchinson had two hits, including a double, for Burroughs (2-0-1) in support of winning pitcher Oscar Fernandez (1-0).

Banning (2-1) had the potential tying run aboard in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to score each time.

Moorpark 4, Newbury Park 3--Winning pitcher Kevin McMullin tossed a one-hitter for the Musketeers (2-0) in a second-round game of the Duarte tournament. He struck out six and walked five.

Getting the only hit off McMullin was Newbury Park sophomore Jake Farrel, who smashed a three-run home run in the third inning. Farrel has five RBIs in the Panthers’ two games.

St. Bonaventure 13, Malibu 2--Jeremy Scarlett had four hits, including a triple, to lead the host Seraphs (4-0) in a nonleague game. Greg Kurtz added three hits for St. Bonaventure, which used five pitchers.

Alhambra 9, Burbank 2--The Bulldogs (1-2) committed seven errors that led to six unearned runs for the Moors (2-1) in a third-round El Segundo tournament game.

SOFTBALL

Reseda 3, Birmingham 1--Rosie Yeatts had three hits and three RBIs for the Regents (1-1) in a nonconference game at Reseda.

Stacy Fields had two hits for Birmingham (1-1).

Verdugo Hills 9, San Fernando 0--Jodi Kent and Elizabeth Llewellyn each drove in two runs for the host Dons (2-0) in a nonconference game.

Melanie Wood struck out five and allowed one hit for Verdugo Hills.

Monroe 10, Taft 1--Kelley Hall (1-1) struck out eight with no walks and pitched a four-hitter for the visiting Vikings (1-1) in a nonconference game. Hall allowed a run in the first then settled down after her teammates scored five in the second for a 6-1 lead. Diane Garcia drove in two runs with three hits and stole two bases for Monroe.

Oak Park 5, Calabasas 2--Kaylene Boldroff pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven, and Kelly Weaver had a two-run single in the decisive second inning of a nonleague game at Calabasas. Oak Park (2-1) scored five runs in the second.

La Canada 8, Glendale 1--Sunny Park ripped a bases-loaded double in the seventh and finished with five RBIs for the Spartans in a nonleague game at Glendale.

Emily Dalbeck was two for three with two RBIs and scored a run for La Canada (3-0).

Kara Campbell had two hits, including a triple, and scored three times for Glendale (1-2).

La Reina 7, Buena 2--Meghann Reiss had three hits, drove in two runs and scored once for the Regents in a nonleague game at Buena. Of La Reina’s seven runs, five were driven in with two out in the inning. Senior right-hander Jennifer Baltruzak pitched a three-hitter.

Maranatha 5, Bell-Jeff 3--Freshman Paloma Arteaga (0-2) pitched a three-hitter but the visiting Guards (0-2) committed four errors behind her in a nonleague game.
