Citing Power Shift, City Opposes Charter

Saying the proposed county charter would take too much power away from voters, the City Council voted this week to oppose it.

Councilwoman Sandra L. Genis, who served on the committee that drew up the charter, said she would oppose Measure T because it concentrated power in the office of the chief executive officer and because it would also turn four elected posts--treasurer, auditor, public administrator and clerk--into appointed posts.

“I don’t think any one person should be given so much control,” Genis said. “I think that if one person controls the flow of information, they also control the outcome.”
