TONIGHT: INTERNATIONAL DANCE

The International Folk Dancers from Brigham Young University will perform traditional dances from around the world tonight in a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Oxnard Civic Auditorium.

Fresh from a performance last night at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the 36 dancers and five musicians will demonstrate dances of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Canada and the United States.

Guest choreographers representing those regions have helped design the program to enhance the show’s authenticity. Traditional costumes and live and taped regional music will add to the cultural flavor.

The dance troupe, made up of full-time students at BYU, will tour Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia beginning in May. The ensemble performed in Seoul, South Korea during the 1988 Olympics and in 1995 toured Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece and Jordan.

SUNDAY: CHORALE CONCERT

Next up on the Ventura County Master Chorale concert calendar will be a notable guest spot, when the Los Angeles Master Chorale appears at the San Buenaventura Mission on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Founded 32 years ago by the late Roger Wagner, the L.A. Master Chorale continues its acclaimed work under the direction of Paul Salamunovich, a Los Angeles native who sang under Wagner’s direction beginning in the late ‘40s. The ensemble was awarded top honors recently in an ASCAP and Chorus America competition. In Ventura, the chorale’s program will include works by Haydn, Durufle, Bruckner, and folk songs of various cultures. Tickets are $18-23; 653-7282.

MONDAY: READY FOR DREAD

Those reggae rockers Urban Dread will be packing them in at Stargate in Thousand Oaks on Monday nights beginning about 9:30. Long a serious draw at the now-defunct Pelican’s Retreat in Calabasas, playing right after Monday Night Football, the Valley-based band moved to the Conejo Valley locale with the half-million-dollar lighting system barely a month ago.

The venue, named after a sci-fi movie starring Kurt Russell, is located at 130 W. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks. The show is free. Information: (805) 496-3755.

UP THE COAST

* The Santa Barbara Symphony will perform the premier of “Santa Barbara Overture,” a musical piece that describes such sounds of the city as the ring of the mission bells, Chumash Indian music, and jazz. Composed by Emma Lou Diemer, the piece will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Arlington Theatre, 1317 State St., Santa Barbara. Tickets are $11 to $36.
