National Guard
I enjoyed your “New Military” series (March 17-19). However, I take exception to allegations that the National Guard and Reserves are “costly” and that they should be cut further.
Nothing could be further from the truth. An Air Guard fighter wing costs less than 60% of its active counterpart. A typical Army Guard unit can cost only about 25% of its active equivalent.
The citizen-soldier has always been a cost-effective option to a large, expensive army. The National Guard will always have a mission.
