Exhibition Sparks Protest: An angry crowd of 300 protesters, most of them affiliated with the Arizona Department of the American Legion, converged on the Phoenix Museum of Art Sunday to decry the exhibition “Old Glory: The American Flag in Contemporary Art.” Legionnaires had demanded the removal of several pieces, including Scott Tyler’s “What Is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag?” A work that requires viewers to walk on a flag laid out on the floor, it was the focus of a similar protest at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1990. Phoenix Museum officials refused the Legion’s demand, prompting the demonstration. The show, organized by Phoenix curator David Rubin, has traveled without incident to several museums in the past two years.
