Whitman Takes Herself Off V.P. Nominee List

LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Gov. Christine Todd Whitman said Wednesday that she has taken herself out of the running as a possible vice presidential candidate.
Whitman, who has been mentioned as a possibility for the spot for more than a year, said she has told presumptive GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole that she wants to remain as governor. Dole’s campaign stressed that he has “not begun the formal process” of selecting a running mate.
