A town mayor and a shop owner denied reports that 77 people died in a shopping mall fire, saying that 10 people were killed and that charred mannequins were mistaken for victims. Eddy Garnadi, mayor of the West Java town of Bogor, said results of forensic examinations showed that only nine women and one man burned to death in the Thursday fire. State-run television said police declined to comment on the mayor’s assessment of the death toll. Reporters at the hospital Friday said they saw at least 16 charred bodies there and that doctors told them there were a total of 76 plastic bags holding remains of victims, but a department store manager also backed the lower toll.
