Callens Road to Be Completely Repaved

With barely a word of discussion, the Ventura City Council agreed to spend $501,000 to repave the entire length of Callens Road and install a traffic signal at the corner of Callens and Market Street, which is now regulated by stop signs.

The council awarded the bid Monday to Berry General Engineering Contractors Inc. of Oxnard, the same firm that supervised the $3.6-million downtown renovation project last summer.

Berry’s was the lowest of five bids received for the project.

The improvements are needed because of the poor condition of the asphalt along Callens Road, officials said.

Improvements will include a new surface between Main and Transport streets, as well as resurfacing along Transport Street west of Donlon Street and Arundell Avenue from Main Street to Channel Drive. Contractors will also rebuild a portion of nearby Fleet Street and improve drainage at Callens Road and Market Street. Work is expected to begin later this year.
