Overtime Pays Off for Orioles
A season ago, Cleveland was 13-0 in extra-inning games en route to an American League championship.
Now, the Indians are 0-1 in overtime.
That loss came Wednesday night when Rafael Palmeiro singled in the winning run for the Orioles in a 3-2 victory in Baltimore.
“Every year is different. You take them as they come,” Cleveland Manager Mike Hargrove said. “You don’t make too much of this series too early in the season.”
Maybe not, but Baltimore--which lost 10 of 12 games to Cleveland last season--is making a lot of being 6-1 and you can bet the Indians aren’t all that happy about being 2-4, early season notwithstanding.
“They’re still a great team--they’re going to be there all year--but it still feels good to win this one,” Palmeiro said.
Jeffrey Hammonds scored the game-winner after opening the 10th with a double to left field off Julian Tavarez (0-1).
Paul Assenmacher relieved and gave up a sacrifice to Brady Anderson. Roberto Alomar was intentionally walked before Palmeiro doubled Hammonds home.
Detroit 7, Seattle 3--Omar Olivares pitched a five-hitter to earn his first American League victory.
