CS Northridge to Name Braswell Basketball Coach
Bobby Braswell, the top assistant at Oregon, will be introduced at a news conference today as Cal State Northridge’s new basketball coach, sources said.
Braswell, reached at home in Eugene, Ore., on Monday night, would not comment. Officials at Northridge have announced a news conference for 2 p.m. today.
Braswell, 33, who was recently turned down for the job at Long Beach State, is a Northridge graduate. This will be his first college head coaching position.
He was chosen for the Northridge job over Mike Miller, coach at L.A. City College; Percy Carr, coach at San Jose City College; Bobby Castagna, an assistant at UC Santa Barbara; and Joe O’Brien, former coach at Lincoln College, a two-year school in Illinois.
Braswell has spent the past four seasons at Oregon after three seasons as an assistant at Long Beach, where he helped the 49ers to two National Invitation Tournament appearances.
He began his coaching career at Cleveland High in Reseda, where his teams were 84-14 in four seasons, including City Section championships in his first two years.
His Cleveland teams produced 16 Division I players, including Adonis Jordan to Kansas, Lucious Harris to Long Beach and Trevor Wilson to UCLA.
Braswell will replace Pete Cassidy, who was fired in March after 25 seasons at Northridge.
