Students Join Global Fitness Program
It was early and already getting warm. But the hundreds of children working out on the asphalt at Willow Elementary School didn’t seem to mind. After all, one said later, they were making news.
Wednesday, students and teachers at the Agoura Hills school participated in a national fitness program, Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously), in which schoolchildren across the country go through a vigorous workout simultaneously. Children from other nations participate as well, at times more suitable to their time zones.
In Agoura Hills, the asphalt became a sea of waving arms and churning legs as the school’s physical education specialist, Cindy O’Hare, led students and teachers through the drill.
“Children are doing this all over the world,” said fifth-grader Jennifer Middleton, after it was over. “We feel like we’re part of something big.”
“And it’s fun,” said classmate Missy Rawnsley.
The school also used the occasion to celebrate May Day. Their principal, Debbie Kaplan, praised the children for their efforts to promote harmony and world peace.
“You model that here at the school in the way you treat each other, the way you respect each other,” she said.
