Sophomore Iverson Drives Off to NBA From Hoyas

Soon All-American guard Allen Iverson will be able to pay for that $130,000 car he is driving.

On Wednesday in Washington, Iverson, a sophomore, said he would leave Georgetown and try his lot with the NBA. He also announced that he is the father of a 1-year-old girl and that he wants to get a specialist for his younger sister, whom he said was suffering from seizures.

He is the first player to leave Georgetown early in Coach John Thompson’s 24 years there.

“I definitely plan to further my education, but my family needs to be addressed right now,” Iverson said.

Speculation about Iverson’s leaving has heightened since he was been driving a Mercedes-Benz on loan from a dealer.

Jermaine Watts, a guard who led DePaul in scoring, assists and steals as a sophomore last season, has been dismissed from school after being charged with drug possession.

A phone tip led to the arrest of Labrant Deshawn Dennis, 24, in the April 13 murders of University of Miami reserve linebacker Marlin Barnes and friend Timwanika Lumpkins in a campus apartment. Dennis was the former boyfriend of Lumpkins and the father of her 3-year-old daughter.

The Georgia Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of former Alabama assistant football coach Jerry Pullen, who in a lawsuit had accused Gene Jelks of slander in his claims that he had been paid to play for the Crimson Tide.

Irving, Texas, police saying Irvin is accused of assault on James Charles Edward in an area shopping center on Wednesday.

Russia defeated Italy, 5-2, and the Czech Republic beat Germany, 6-1, in Vienna to advance to the semifinals of the World Ice Hockey Championships. Russia plays Canada and the Czechs meet the United States in the semifinals. . . . The International Hockey League will have teams in Quebec and Winnipeg next season.
