Bendt Is Medalist at Orange League Finals

Brea Olinda’s Steve Bendt shot a final-round one-over-par 73 Thursday at Alta Vista to win medalist honors by eight strokes in the Orange League individual golf finals.

Bendt finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament at four-over 216. He shot one-over 72 at Dad Miller Monday and two-over 74 at Los Coyotes Tuesday. Valencia’s Dalen DeMary shot three-over 75 Thursday to finish second at 227.

Brea’s Anthony Eliason was third, teammate Brad Sader fourth, and Valencia’s Eric Lama finished fifth. The top five finishers advanced to the Southern Section finals.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 385, Fountain Valley 415--Perry Dickey shot a four-under 67 to lead Huntington Beach (13-5, 8-2) to a co-league championship with Esperanza. Dickey, who shot 31 in Wednesday’s round, finished with a 36 at SeaCliff Country Club.

Esperanza 204, Edison 205--Ryan Donovan shot a two-over 37 and was the medalist as the Aztecs edged Edison by one stroke at Yorba Linda Country Club.

In Sea View League girls’ diving:

Marquis wins--Kristen Marquis of Santa Margarita, a freshman, won the 11-dive competition with 552.65 points. Kenesha Jespersen of El Toro was second at 484.45.

In Empire League volleyball:

Western 3, Valencia 1--Steve Sieks had 20 kills to help Western (14-2, 9-1) earn a share of the league title with Valencia (15-3, 9-1).

Vince Branstetter had 16 kills and Naichez Belmont added 14 for the Pioneers. Kevin Jackley had 18 kills for the Tigers.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Pacifica 1--La Quinta won its second consecutive league title, its third in the last four years, defeating Pacifica 15-4, 12-15, 15-7, 15-6. Scott Ogilvie had 21 kills and Dave Ballantyne added 12 for La Quinta (14-2, 12-0).

In Garden Grove League tennis:

Garden Grove 17, Los Amigos 1--Bryan Tran swept in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for host Garden Grove (17-3, 10-0), which clinched its fourth consecutive league title with its 41st consecutive league victory.

In the Golden West League:

Servite sweeps--Ryan Moore won the singles championship and Ali Sajedian and Ryan Mauban teamed to win the doubles title for Servite at the league championships.

Moore defeated Paul Choi of Ocean View, 7-5, 7-5. Sajedian and Mauban beat Friars teammates Joe Ganahl and Devin Haverland, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
