After months of uncertainty, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) has completed plans for its 1996 world championship match between Anatoly Karpov of Russia and Gata Kamsky of New York. The 20-game match will begin June 5 in Elista, Russia. The winner will receive about $690,000 of the $1.1-million prize fund.

Kamsky, the 21-year-old former U.S. champion, agreed to play under protest in Elista. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who lives in Elista, put strong pressure on Kamsky, even threatening to replace him with Valery Salov (whom Kamsky smashed, 5 1/2-1 1/2, in the Candidates matches) if Kamsky demanded another site.

FIDE pushed back the starting date four days to let Kamsky compete in a super tournament ending June 2 in Dos Hermanos, Spain. If all of the invitees play, the Dos Hermanos tournament will boast the highest-rated field in history.
