Brea Olinda’s De Simone 2nd in Gymnastics
Brea Olinda’s Shaunna De Simone finished first on the vault and was second in the all-around competition at the Southern Section individual gymnastics finals Saturday at Brea Olinda High.
De Simone was second in the floor exercise and third on the bars.
Jaime Moody of Long Beach Millikan won the all-around by .05 over De Simone, placing first on the bars and balance beam and second on the vault. Tennli Ulicny of Brea Olinda was fifth in the all-around with a third in floor exercise and a fifth on the vault.
In Golden West League softball:
Ocean View 5, Westminster 3 (10 innings)--Ocean View scored twice in the 10th inning to earn a share of the Golden West League title.
The Seahawks (16-10, 8-2) finished the regular season in a three-way tie for first with Westminster (20-6, 8-2) and Rosary. The Royals (20-9, 8-2) won a series of coin flips Saturday afternoon and will advance to the Division II playoffs as the league’s top representative. Westminster is No. 2 and Ocean View No. 3.
Westminster took the lead when Krissy Keene tripled in Lacy Hauxhurst in the first. The Seahawks came back with runs in the fourth and fifth on RBI singles by Cara Vanderhook and Lovie Jung and led, 2-1, going to the bottom of the seventh.
Melanie Heinle tied the score in the seventh when her single was misplayed by Ocean View left fielder Lisa Parra, enabling Heinle to score easily. Ocean View took the lead in the eighth on an unearned run, but Keene homered to lead off the inning with a home run to tie the score. In the 10th, Leah Gulla led off with a single for Ocean View, went to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a wild pitch. Danielle Garcia later singled to score Sara Gulla.
Gulla (9-5) gave up one hit in three innings of relief.
In Pacific Coast League softball:
University 3, Laguna Beach 1--Kristin Scarborough and Kari Rowberg had RBI singles with two out in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and give University (11-14) the victory in the third-place playoff game at Laguna Beach.
