At least five soldiers were wounded in clashes in southern Lebanon, the first Israeli casualties there since a war against Muslim guerrillas ended last month. The Israeli army said its troops were attacked twice in the eastern part of the “security zone” it occupies. The casualties were the Israeli army’s first since a U.S.-brokered cease-fire took hold April 27. The truce does not require the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas to stop attacks on Israeli troops in the occupied zone and permits Israel to retaliate, but not against civilian targets. Israel responded to the attacks with air strikes and an hourlong artillery barrage, security sources said.
