3 Win Independencia Center Scholarships
In recognition of their volunteer efforts in a low-income area of the city, three local students will be awarded scholarships this week by directors of the Anaheim Independencia Community Center.
The recipients are Sophia Garcia from Cypress College, Francis Amaya from Fullerton College and Manuel Ontiveros of UC Irvine.
The three will share $3,700 in awards from the Cynthia Coad Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992, the fund is designed to foster positive role models and to counter gang activity and other negative influences in the predominantly Latino community.
The scholarships are for either degree-oriented or vocational training.
