Senators Get First Selection in NHL Draft
The Ottawa Senators will have the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft for the second year in a row after winning Sunday’s draft lottery in New York.
Ottawa, which finished with a league-worst record of 18-59-5, is expected to make defenseman Chris Phillips the No. 1 pick at the June 22 draft in St. Louis.
Ottawa’s victory allowed the Kings to avoid the embarrassment of winning the top pick after trading it to Washington last summer for forward Dimitri Khristich and goaltender Byron Dafoe.
The Mighty Ducks, who have never drafted lower than fourth, have the ninth pick in a draft that is not very strong at the top.
Ottawa’s victory left the draft order unchanged among the 10 teams that failed to make the playoffs. San Jose will pick second, followed by the New York Islanders, Washington (acquired from the Kings), Dallas, Edmonton, Buffalo, Boston (acquired from Hartford), the Ducks and New Jersey.
