3-City Police Network Approved
To cut costs and improve services, the City Council on Wednesday approved a proposal to combine police communications services with those of the Cypress and Seal Beach police departments.
The tri-city dispatch system, which also drew support from the Cypress City Council earlier this week, could save Los Alamitos an estimated $88,000 in the first year of operation, officials said, and could save Cypress about $74,000.
Los Alamitos Police Chief Michael J. Skogh said the joint effort would improve services, community safety and officer safety.
The dispatch staff would be more consolidated, with 22 full-time positions.
A new, regional communications center, which would open in about 18 months, would be in place when the county launches an 800-megahertz radio system to link all jurisdictions.
Some details of the proposal are still being worked out, Cypress Police Chief Daryl Wicker told that city’s council.
General agreement has already been reached on situating the system in Seal Beach, he said.
The regional communications center would serve 87,000 residents of the three cities’ 25-square-mile area.
