Storm Over Jazz Fest
Re: “KLON Fest Ends With Works Showing Range of Big Bands” (May 28). The L.A. Times again got its priorities right in devoting 10 short paragraphs to the KLON-FM-sponsored “Blowin’ Up a Storm” and gave a half page to a front page story on an R&B; group filing for bankruptcy on the same day.
Don Heckman calls the trumpet players who took the Miles Davis parts “all-stars” and then slams most of them for not copying Davis’ style. Then he proceeds to slam the orchestra for not rehearsing enough; does Heckman allow for logistics at all?
Heckman calls Ken Poston’s approach “narrowcasting production.” Come on, how narrow was it? How many days of the four-day festival did he attend?
If the performers and the audience at most straight-ahead jazz concerts are predominantly white, middle-age males, is there a problem with that? Does Mr. Heckman suggest there is something racist about this? If so, he should say so. We’re waiting for his lineup and ticket-selling policies.
