Future of Multilingual Preschool Is Uncertain
Questions remain about the future of the county’s only multilingual preschool, with the impending sale of the site where the program’s 185 students attend classes.
Irvine Unified School District has set a June 10 deadline for prospective buyers to make bids on the 3.5-acre site, called the Auxiliary Education Center, on West Yale Loop in Woodbridge. The property is being sold through the Newport Beach office of Grubb & Ellis.
The 9-year-old Montessori International Early Childhood Education Center has until June 1997 to find an alternate location.
“It is really their call on where they go,” school board member Margie Wakeham said. “The school district has tried to work with them to find a new location.”
The value of the property has been estimated at between $2 million and $4 million.
Before the preschool and other auxiliary programs came to the site, it served as a temporary school, housing students in portable classrooms in advance of new campus openings.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to build a Woodbridge High School theater and fund $500,000 in miscellaneous projects throughout the district.
