WASHINGTON, D.C. : School Still Won’t Host Justice Thomas
The embattled school superintendent who revoked a speaking invitation to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reportedly said the invitation will be extended again only if the school board insists. Supt. Jerome Clark of the Prince George’s County school system, who on Thursday said that Thomas would be reinvited, released a statement Friday saying he stood by his decision to cancel the invitation. School board Chairwoman Marcy Canavan said Clark told her he would not reissue an invitation unless the board directs him to or if the board invites Thomas. Three black school board members, critical of Thomas’ record against civil rights initiatives, had threatened a boycott if Thomas appeared as scheduled for an awards ceremony at the Thomas Pullen School for the Performing Arts.
