Titans’ Kotsay a Finalist for Top College Award

Cal State Fullerton outfielder Mark Kotsay is one of three finalists for the Smith Award, which goes to college baseball’s top player.

Other finalists are Clemson pitcher Kris Benson and Texas Tech third baseman Clint Bryant. Kotsay won the award last year as a sophomore.

Benson led his team to the College World Series with a 14-0 record and 1.40 earned-run average. Kotsay hit .402 with 20 home runs and 91 runs batted in. Bryant batted .393 with 18 homers and 100 RBIs.

The award will be presented June 27 in Houston.

Dominick Lombardi, a catcher at Saddleback College, has committed to attend UC Riverside, his father, Dominick, Sr., said.

Lombardi batted .331 and hit seven home runs.

Marc Anspach, Fullerton College first baseman, has signed to attend Cal Poly Pomona. Anspach was a two-time all-league player at Brea Olinda. He hit .252 last season as a sophomore.

Rancho Santiago’s Kristi Bolle and Sheryl Anderson have been named to the National Softball Coaches Assn. community college All-American team. Bolle, a sophomore from El Modena, hit .346 last season. She has signed to attend Oklahoma State.

Anderson, a freshman from Orange, was 33-10-1 with a 0.83 ERA.

Chapman pitcher Christy Guidorizzi has been named the top Division III player by the National Softball Coaches of America. Guidorizzi, a sophomore, was 26-4 last season with four no-hitters and 15 shutouts.
