Author Alma Cervantes says her bilingual AIDS-prevention novela, “In Our Hands / En Nuestra Manos,” is based entirely on situations she has witnessed among Latinas in Los Angeles County. The novela, a drama in comic-book form, discusses specific risks including unsafe sexual behavior linked to alcohol, having a promiscuous mate, marriage to a bisexual man and sexual issues related to low self-esteem.
The novela was was produced by the nonprofit Los Angeles Alliance for a Drug-Free Community. The first chapter is shown here.
