Cowboys’ Irvin Indicted Again by Grand Jury

Two days after charges against them were thrown out on a technicality, receiver Michael Irvin of the Dallas Cowboys and two topless dancers were indicted again Friday in Dallas on drug-possession charges.

Irvin, whose legal problems stem from a March 4 drug bust at a motel in Irving, Texas, has been charged with possession of cocaine--a felony--and of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

A judge on Wednesday had dismissed charges against Irvin, 30, because a member of the grand jury that had indicted him April 1 lived outside the county.

Tennis

Top-seeded Thomas Muster, playing some of the best grass-court tennis of his career, rallied to beat ninth-seeded Mark Woodforde, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, to reach the semifinals of the Queen’s Club tournament in London.

Also advancing were No. 2 Boris Becker, who defeated Australia’s Patrick Rafter, 7-5, 6-4, and No. 14 Stefan Edberg, who defeated American Todd Martin, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

In the other quarterfinal match, No. 4 Wayne Ferreira defeated French Open runner-up Michael Stich of Germany, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Richard Krajicek and Jan Siemerink, seeded Dutch players, were beaten in the quarterfinals of the Heineken Open grass court tournament at Rosmalen, Netherlands. Third-seeded Krajicek was upset by countryman Paul Haarhuis, 6-4, 7-5. Fifth-seeded Siemerink was beaten by unseeded Swede Jonas Bjoerkman, 6-1, 6-7 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).

Gabriela Sabatini withdrew from Wimbledon, which begins June 24, because of a pulled stomach muscle, the same injury that caused her to withdraw from the French Open.

Brenda Schultz-McCarthy and Natalie Tauziat, the top-seeded players, won in straight sets and reached the semifinals of the DFS Classic women’s grass-court tournament at Birmingham, England.

Top-seeded Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands beat unseeded Larisa Neiland of Latvia, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), and No. 2 Tauziat of France beat eighth-seeded Laurence Courtois of Belgium, 6-0, 6-2.

Golf

Donna Andrews continued her comeback from a nagging back injury with a 65, seven under par, in the first round of the Edina Realty LPGA Classic in suburban Minneapolis.

Andrews had seven birdies to match the best round of her career in taking a two-shot lead over Liselotte Neumann.

Stephanie Maynor, Jean Bartholomew and Jane Geddes are three shots behind at 68.

Senior PGA Tour rookie John Bland shot a five-under-par 65 and shared the second-round lead at seven-under 133 in the Canadian Senior Open at Ancaster, Ontario. Tied with Bland is Larry Mowry, the first-round leader who shot a second-round 67.

Hockey

Andy van Hellemond retired as an NHL referee after 25 years in the league and signed on as senior vice president and director of operations for the East Coast Hockey League. . . . The San Jose Sharks acquired veteran defenseman Todd Gill from the Toronto Maple Leafs for center Jamie Baker and a fifth-round pick in next week’s NHL draft.

Former King coach Tom Webster resigned as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Flyers. . . . Goaltender Bob Essensa, who spent the last two seasons in the minors, was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers from the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations.

Ted O’Connor, a longtime scout for the Kings and the old Minnesota North Stars, has died of cancer. He was 65.

Miscellany

Jeff Gordon continued his blitz of the Winston Cup stock car racing circuit by winning his third consecutive pole with a speed of 169.725 mph in a Chevrolet at the resurfaced Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., where the UAW-GM Teamwork 500 will be run Sunday.

In a surprise move, the Kentucky Racing Commission ignored the recommendation of its own advisory committee and overturned a suspension of jockey Pat Day for careless riding May 12. Churchill Downs stewards had suspended Day for five racing days.

Kenny Bernstein, John Force, Chuck Harris and Dave Schultz are the No. 1 qualifiers for final eliminations today in the National Hot Rod Assn. drag racing event at Hebron, Ohio.

Bernstein was No. 1 in top fuel, Force in funny cars, Harris in pro stocks and Schultz in pro stock motorcycles when qualifying ended June 8. Eliminations were postponed last Sunday because of rain.
