City Awards Contract to Same Trash Hauler

The company that has picked up the city’s trash for two decades will keep the job for at least another seven years.

The City Council this week chose Waste Management of Orange County over several other bidders for the contract and agreed to pay the Santa Ana company $22.8 million over seven years.

Under the agreement, residential garbage rates will be about $11 a month, down from $14. Businesses and other commercial accounts will see their bills drop about 20%.

The city staff had recommended Waste Management, which submitted the lowest bid. Its contract includes a new green waste service that will allow residents to recycle yard refuse such as lawn clippings.

The city will not change its manual pickup system, which requires residents to use their own trash containers.
