HIS CUP RUNNETH OUT
Mouthpieces and fighters hit the canvas all the time, but Ghanan light-flyweight Alfred Tetteh dropped a new wrinkle into the boxing competition when his protective cup fell to the floor in the first round of his bout Sunday night with Morocco’s Hamed Berhili.
Tetteh was ahead, 2-1, when the plastic protector fell out of his pants, to the crowd and referee’s surprise.
The referee, Jean-Claude Lepatre, picked up the cup, escorted it and Tetteh to his corner and his trainer put it back in. To a loud cheer, and with a broad smile, Tetteh returned to action, but lost, 10-5.
